Difference‌ ‌between‌ ‌Hub‌ ‌and‌ ‌Switch‌

Hub and Switch are known to be the top-rated computer networking devices. These are used for different purposes and peculiarly play their role. Various aspects distinguish Switch from Hub.

Hub VS Switch

The networking device that enables the user to connect with multiple PCs is the papular as Hub. A single user can enjoy connecting to various PCs with the use of this fabulous device. However, the device that is responsible for connecting enormous devices simultaneously with the one computer network is a network switch.

The network switch is the significant source that helps much in routing the critical information in the electronic data form. This can quickly sent over the network with swiftness. Bridging is the most crucial feature of the network switch. Indeed, it is such a process that allows the linking of various network segments. Hence, most often, the network switches are also known as bridging devices.

Cable

When it is about the operations of Hub and Switch, then these require a particular cable for it. The cable that uses for the performance of Hub is none other than a Half-duplex cable. While, on the contrary, Full-duplex cables use for operating and connecting the Switch. In the case of LAN (Local Area Network), both Switch and Hub can use. The physical layer uses to operate the Hub, while the data link layer works flawlessly for operating the network switch.

Types of Hub

Hub comes in two types which are passive Hub and active Hub. The Hub that comprises its power supply is papular as Active Hub. It enjoys a much better signal and has significant improvement in it. Active Hub performs the dual function of wiring center and repeater. The users can benefit from it by using it as an extension. It could work as an extension for multiple nodes. At the same time, passive Hub gets the power supply from wiring or active Hub. It does not boost or clean the network signals. Moreover, it cannot extend to wider distances.

Types of Switch: Difference between hub and switch

Manageable switches and unmanageable switches are the two categories of network switches. There is the IP address and console part for the manageable Switch. It can configure and assign with ease. However, there is no console port in the case of unmanageable switches, and similarly, there is no IP address too, and hence the configuration is not possible in it.

Features

The spanning tree protocol is not supported by Hub. Moreover, it comes up with a single broadcast domain. There exist enormous packet collisions in Hub. Switch leads to efficient and flawless performance due to multiport bridges. The range of ports for the network switch is from 24 ports to 48 ports. It comes up with a fixed bandwidth.

The Switch can organize, maintain and manage the MAC address table. The Switch sends the signals through the use of packet and frame while Hub takes the assistance of electrical signal orbits. Network switch allows the multiple spanning trees and refers to as an intelligent device.
